Leander passes ‘child safety zone’ ordinance

KVUE 4:19 p.m. CST December 18, 2015

LEANDER, Texas – The Leander City Council recently passed an ordinance to establish safety zones for children throughout the city.

According to Leander police, the ordinance states a child sex offender cannot establish a permanent or temporary residence within 1,000 feet of any premises where children commonly gather (ex: day cares, schools, parks, libraries). The ordinance was passed at the council’s Dec. 3 meeting and immediately went into effect.

Police said child sex offenders currently living in those areas are not required to move unless they move or their lease/rent is terminated. Furthermore, offenders cannot leave a porch light on or invite trick-or-treaters to their premises on Halloween.

The ordinance states anyone in violation could face misdemeanor charges and fines.
