“Normal people’s belief is these sex offenders are constantly reoffending,” said DA investigator Kyle Gibson.

Investigators say they did find child porn when they scoured computers of two probationers. It’s the kind of high-tech snooping that probation officers are not trained or equipped to carry out.

But it’s a specialty for the growing forensics unit of the Tarrant County DA’s office, which ran the operation.
“Based on the software we can show each thumb drive plugged into the computer,” said Gibson.

Nearly half the probationers had some kind of violations. Most were considered technical violations.

“They were finding adult porn, not child porn. They were finding alcohol. In a couple cases there were weapons,” said Danny McCormick, assistant chief of the DA’s investigative division.

McCormick and Gibson were surprised that only two of 22 appeared to be committing new sex crimes. No arrests were made, but cases are being developed.

“I was shocked it was not more new offenses,” McCormick said.
